Profile, method, and information on creative projects.
Hi! I'm Erik von Stackelberg, a 23-year-old aspiring designer-nerd/electronic-musician/bedroom-DJ/student-of-media-theory/proud Canadian & staunch civil society advocate. I grew up in
North Bay, Ontario, Canada and graduated from the
University of Western Ontario and
Fanshawe College with an Hons BA in
Media, Information & Technoculture and a diploma in multimedia design. My work spans the nonprofit & commercial sectors and centres on web design & development, branding & identity design, and motion graphics, but also involves sound design, 3D, and photography.

Some designers have a particular trademark style. I approach design with a different goal: As a self-admitted design fanatic, I enjoy experimenting within a wide spectrum of aesthetic systems. In particular, my extensive work within the nonprofit sector has afforded me opportunity to embrace various modes of design. Coupled with a thorough understanding of media theory, this flexibility lends itself well to exploring new creative avenues that suit individual projects, both commercial and nonprofit. So while I often envy those illustrators and designers who brand themselves so eloquently with a specific “house style,” I instead leverage my design flexibility to build unique brand identity and help establish “style” for others.
This website both embodies and showcases the variety of creative work I pursue through commercial, nonprofit, and personal projects. It is an aggregator for all of the work I produce, but does not house content locally. With this site I hope to provide a feed'able hub/portal for individuals interested in the full breadth of my work, not merely a particular facet. For more information on those individual facets -- and on the projects that feed this site -- please see links and descriptions below. Also, feel free to contact me using the form to the right. I'm always happy to hear new requests, feedback, or simply ideas about media theory, electronic music, photography, and design. Cheers! :)
Work.stackelberg.ca is my commercial portfolio and focuses primarily on web design & development, branding & identity design, and motion graphics. Here you will find work I have pursued both as a freelance designer and as a contracted member of various design & development teams. If you happen to be reading this as a prospective client, I will happily respond to inquiries submitted either through the contact form above, or through the form found on my commercial portfolio site. If you are reading this as a student designer, know that 99% of the commercial work I do can in some way be traced back to a volunteer effort from my past -- no doubt a testament to the perks associated with work in the civil society. :)
I operate DesigntoLove as an outlet for my own entirely pro bono initiatives.DesigntoLove is a nonprofit organization that I conceptualized in 2006 and founded in 2007 with the help of my colleague, Shannon Everett, and with support from the Canada Millennium Foundation. DesigntoLove represents the culmination of my passion for volunteerism: Once fully established, DesigntoLove will serve both the nonprofit and design communities by connecting volunteer student designers with charitable and nonprofit organizations. The central notion here is mutual benefit for a greater good: designers want to design, and nonprofits want to relieve funds to fulfill their own mandates -- not their advertising campaigns.
FusedEffects is an online exhibition that features self-initiated and experimental work from the brains of both myself and Jerry Low, my good friend from British Columbia. In high school we inaugurated FusedEffects as a method of showcasing our infant digital creativity. Today, the site hosts my photography, electronic music production, and various self-initiated and academic design endeavours. Jerry has his own selection of work available as well, and we hope to begin posting written work on design, coding, and media theory over time.
I produce electronic music under the pseudonym Stackelberg Komputer. As with design, I am very interested in a wide array of musical genres, and have difficulty settling in to any one particular groove (punny, no?) The majority of my work can probably be slotted under amateur-but-starting-to-sound-better house & breaks, but I'll leave the definition up to you. All of my music is hosted on FusedEffects and I always appreciate constructive feedback.
